McKenna's Rainbow Unicorn 4th Birthday Party at The Painting Place
There are some birthdays that just feel extra magical, and McKenna's rainbow unicorn party was definitely one of them.
This year we celebrated with one of her preschool friends, and when McKenna started talking about her birthday months ago, she only had one request- a rainbow and unicorn party. Once we settled on the theme, we found the perfect venue: The Painting Place in Wellesley.
We had been to birthday parties there before and loved how smoothly everything was run, so I knew it would be a great fit for a room full of energetic four-year-olds. After hosting our own party there, I can honestly say it exceeded every expectation.
Why We Chose The Painting Place
We've attended several birthday parties at The Painting Place over the years, and every single one has been incredibly well organized.
One of my favorite things about the venue is that the staff truly keeps the party moving from beginning to end. If the kids finish an activity early, they immediately transition into something else, whether that's a dance party, face painting, or another fun surprise. There was never a moment where twenty preschoolers were standing around wondering what to do next.
As parents, that meant we could actually enjoy the party instead of trying to entertain everyone ourselves.
The venue also has a private birthday room where we decorated, served pizza and cake, and celebrated together before the kids headed back for more activities.
Party Details
Theme: Rainbow & Unicorn
Location: The Painting Place – Wellesley, MA
Guests: About 20 children
Age: Mostly 4-year-olds with a few older siblings
Party Length: 1½ hours
Honestly, ninety minutes was the perfect amount of time. Every minute was filled with activities, and the kids were engaged from start to finish.
Planning Was So Easy
We booked the party a couple of months in advance because June weekends were filling up quickly.
The Painting Place handled all of the entertainment, which made planning incredibly simple.
All we had to bring was:
Pizza
Snacks
Drinks
Cake
Decorations
Paper goods
Party favors
Compared to hosting larger celebrations at home, it was such a stress-free experience. After recently planning my sister's baby shower, this party reminded me just how nice it is to have someone else handle keeping the kids entertained while parents can actually relax and catch up.
One thing that surprised me most was how many parents had never been to a party at The Painting Place before. By the end of the party, everyone was talking about what a great venue it was.
The Party Timeline
Everything flowed so naturally throughout the morning.
Our celebration looked like this:
Guests arrived
Face painting
Blacklight neon plaster painting
Pizza and snacks
Birthday cake
Dance party
Cotton candy
Birthday handprints on the wall
Group photo
Party favors
The transitions between activities were seamless, and there wasn't a single bored child all morning.
DIY Details That Made the Party Special
While the venue handled the entertainment, I wanted to add a few personalized touches.
Personalized Painting Smocks
My favorite DIY project was making each child their own personalized painting smock using my Cricut.
Not only did they help keep everyone's clothes clean during painting (although they probably should have kept them on for cupcakes too!), but every child got to take theirs home afterward.
This ended up being one of the biggest hits with the parents. Several moms commented on what a practical favor it was since kids are always painting, crafting, or doing messy activities at home.
I love favors that actually get used after the party, and this was definitely one of them.
The Decorations
Since The Painting Place already has such a fun atmosphere, we kept the decorations simple with soft pastel rainbow colors.
Some of my favorite details included:
Pastel balloon bouquets
Oversized unicorn balloon
Rainbow birthday banner
Unicorn plates and napkins
Iridescent sequin table runner
Unicorn party hats at each place setting
A beautiful rainbow unicorn cupcake cake
Everything felt bright, colorful, and perfect for a room full of little unicorn lovers.
The Cupcake Cake Was a Game Changer
Our cake came from Muffin House, and this was our first time ordering a cupcake cake.
It looked just like one large decorated cake with a beautiful rainbow and unicorn design, but when it came time to serve dessert, each cupcake simply pulled apart.
No cutting.
No messy slices.
No waiting.
I can confidently say this won't be our last cupcake cake. It made serving twenty kids so much easier while still giving us the look of a traditional birthday cake.
Our Favorite Party Favor: Adopt a Unicorn
Without a doubt, this was my favorite detail of the party.
I found an Adopt a Unicorn kit on Amazon that came with enough supplies for 24 children for around $55, making it an incredible value.
The kit included:
Mini plush unicorns
Adoption certificates
Little carrying houses
I assembled all of the houses beforehand, and as guests were leaving, McKenna and her friend loved handing them out.
The best part was that every child got to choose the color unicorn they wanted.
Some of the kids filled out their adoption certificates right at the party, while others took them home to complete with their parents. Since most of our guests were around four years old, it was fun seeing some of them beginning to write on their own while others proudly dictated their unicorn's name to Mom or Dad.
It was such a sweet way to end the celebration.
The Best Part of the Day
There were so many favorite moments.
Before we had even finished setting up, McKenna and her friend had already put on their personalized smocks and picked out exactly what they wanted to paint. They were just so excited for the party to begin.
Her favorite activities were definitely a tie between the neon blacklight painting and the cotton candy.
Watching her face when the cotton candy machine was wheeled into the room was priceless.
One little girl even came up to me before leaving and told me it was "the best party ever."
As any parent who spends weeks planning a birthday, hearing those words makes every bit of work completely worth it.
Would We Book Again?
Absolutely.
I would recommend The Painting Place for children around ages 4–7, especially if they're interested in the blacklight painting experience.
The venue also offers other activities like bracelet making and candle making that would be perfect for older kids.
If you're looking for a birthday party where the kids stay entertained, parents actually get to enjoy themselves, and everyone leaves smiling, I honestly can't recommend it enough.
We'll definitely be back.
Looking Back
I still can't believe McKenna is four.
The years really do fly by. She is one of the sweetest little girls, but she's also becoming so confident in who she is. Watching her personality grow, seeing her excitement over the smallest things, and celebrating milestones like this make me appreciate these years even more.

McKenna's rainbow unicorn birthday was everything she had hoped for and more. Between the glowing artwork, dance party, cotton candy, and watching each child proudly leave with their newly adopted unicorn, it was one of those celebrations I'll always remember.
As much as I love planning parties at home, this celebration reminded me that sometimes the best gift you can give yourself is choosing a venue that lets you enjoy the day right alongside your child. The Painting Place took care of entertaining the kids, which meant we were able to spend the afternoon making memories with family and friends instead of worrying about what came next.
If you're planning a birthday for a preschooler or young elementary-aged child, I hope this post gave you some inspiration- whether it's the venue, the DIY smocks, the Adopt-a-Unicorn favors, or simply the reminder that you don't have to do everything yourself to create a magical celebration.
